Drawbridge Construction Update - 8/23

Vehicular Traffic Impacts
US Route 2 at the drawbridge is open to two-lane two-way traffic. There are flaggers onsite to assist with construction trucks entering and existing the work zone. The contractor is working between 6 AM and 6 PM, Monday thru Saturday this week. Next week the contractor will be working Monday thru Thursday with no work on Friday or Labor Day. Please SLOW DOWN and obey the speed limits within the work zone. The work zone speed limit is enforced, and individuals have been ticketed for excessive speeding. Obeying the speed limit is extremely important for everyone's safety.

Bridge Openings
The bridge will open at the top of the hour between 8 AM and 8 PM daily for marine traffic. It will also open for 30 minutes some time between 6:30 and 8:00 AM this Monday (8/27) for greasing. There is no planned greasing on Labor Day, this will begin on Tuesday (9/4) at 8:30 AM. Greasing will resume on Mondays on September 10th at 8:30 AM, and it will continue on Mondays at 8:30 AM through the remainder of the season. Recent News & Events

Planned Construction Activities
The contractor is nearing completion for building out the temporary bridge to the first pier. They will then begin building out the temporary bridge to the second pier. There will be short periods of pile driving with limited noise impacts. Pile driving is the installation of cylindrical steel piles using a hammer which is connected to a crane. The hammer vibrates the piles further into the ground. The photo to the right shows the timber decking being placed on the first temporary bridge span (located on the west side of the bridge).

Traffic Impacts
US Route 2 at the drawbridge is reduced to one-lane two way traffic. There is a signal and flaggers at the bridge directing traffic. The bridge will open at the top of the hour between 8 AM and 8 PM daily for marine traffic. It will also open for 30 minutes some time between 6:30 and 8:00 AM on Monday mornings for greasing. Please plan ahead and expect delays.

Planned Construction Activities
The contractor will begin driving piles with a hammer today (see cylindrical steel piles to the right). The hammer is connected to the crane and vibrates the piles further into the ground. This work will be some of the loudest work during the project. Next week, the contractor will continue building the bridge abutments. The bridge abutments are a support system for the temporary drawbridge. Once these are installed the contractor will begin installing the first bridge pier in the lake. The contractor is working 6 days per week, Monday thru Saturday, between 6 AM and 6 PM.
